Collection: LOCKET AND RELIQUARIES

Lockets, those small hidden treasures in the history of jewelry, have been silent witnesses of moments of love, nostalgia and memories. Although today they may seem like an accessory of the past, their timeless charm continues to captivate those who appreciate the beauty and emotionality they contain.

These delicate reliquaries, designed to hold small photographs, locks of hair or secret messages, have an origin dating back to ancient times. In Victorian times, lockets became symbols of love and affection, often exchanged between loved ones as sentimental gifts. The designs were varied, from the classic heart-shaped ones to the most elaborate ones with filigree details and inlaid precious stones.

During the Victorian era, these accessories were richly decorated with enamels, precious stones and pearls, often featuring designs of flowers, birds and other striking motifs. You could say that the lockets took inspiration from ancient reliquaries. In addition to their aesthetic value, lockets had protective connotations. Carrying a lock of a loved one's hair was believed to offer security, especially in times of separation or war.

In Victorian England, "mourning jewelry" was a popular fashion, and "lockets" were worn as bracelets, brooches, rings, or little boxes. Famous people such as William Morris, the Shelleys, Lord Byron and Larra used them. These jewels were wearable and displayable, often containing hair from deceased people. Locks of hair were also exchanged as gestures of love and taken to the front lines to keep loved ones close.

The 'locket' trend is very present in the world of jewelry fashion. We have experienced a resurgence of lockets or reliquaries, vintage and antique style pieces that evoke nostalgia for bygone eras. These jewels are inspired by memories and antique objects, and have been seen on the catwalks of renowned designers. For example, McQueen in a 1997 interview for Time Out said: “The inspiration for the hair thing comes from the Victorian era, when prostitutes sold theirs for lockets; “People bought it to give to their lovers.” Surely these vintage pieces are already sought-after collectors items.

What are you waiting for to find your antique or vintage jewelry that you can carry close to your heart?
