Antique Victorian oval nickel silver locket by M&S, circa 1880

Antique Victorian oval nickel silver locket by M&S, circa 1880

Out of stock

This delicate oval locket in nielloed silver, signed with the M&S hallmark, is a jewel from the late Victorian era, probably dating from around 1880-1890. Its surface features a finely worked checkered pattern created using the niello technique, an ancient decorative art that involves inlaying a black paste of sulfur and silver over engravings to create intense contrasts.

The front features a smooth central ellipse, designed to be engraved with initials or a heartfelt message. Inside, a lock of hair is preserved, a common element in 19th-century mourning or memorial jewelry.

These pieces were deeply personal and emotional: they held photographs, locks of hair, or small relics, and symbolized a bond that transcended distance and time. This particular piece is a magnificent example of Victorian restraint combined with an almost contemporary graphic style.

Niello was widely used during the 19th century for its durability and elegant visual contrast. In Victorian jewelry, this type of dark finish evoked introspection, mourning, or contemplation, in keeping with the romantic sensibilities of the era.
