In England, where the most famous steel cutting workshops were located around 1760. Jewelers hitting the green at that time cut steel jewelry at a higher price than gold. Steel jewelry became fashionable in France and its enormous cost made it popular among the nobility. Napoleon, on his second marriage to Marie Louise of Austria, commissioned an entire piece of cut steel for his new wife. In 1775, Mathew Boulton was the most famous blacksmith, first in London and then in Birmingham. By the 1790s, the industry was producing its best work, although the French Revolution deprived British workshops of their best customer. Although many shops in England closed, the French cut steel industry survived until the early 19th century.
