These exceptional Catalan or Aragonese earrings from the late 18th and early 19th centuries perfectly represent Spanish jewelry. They are called "arracadas" and are made of 14-carat gold and decorated with finely set natural garnets. Their design allows their three bodies to be detachable and adapt to three ways of wearing them, either attached to the ears or in a teardrop shape. In the photos you can see them in two ways, although the last part can also be disassembled. Their closure is the opposite of how we know them today and they close from the top. They close tightly and although it does not make them easy to use on a daily basis, it is the original closure of the time.

This type of earring allowed women to adjust the jewel according to the occasion. The upper button, which is attached to the earlobe, is square and gives way to pendants with geometric and vegetal shapes, characteristic of the decorative style of the time, as reflected in the piece we are describing.

During the 18th century, jewellery in Catalonia and Aragon, as in the rest of Spain, was influenced by the Rococo and Neoclassical styles. Traditional Catalan earrings stand out for their elegance and versatility, often being known as “herring earrings” or “sardine earrings” due to their thin, elongated shapes, similar to those of a fish or a butterfly with outstretched wings. This design was not only aesthetic, but also practical, as it allowed the jewel to grow and transform according to the importance of the event.
